Beautiful new lilac growth dies... #757524
Asked June 21, 2021, 3:42 PM EDT
Last summer I took my over grown lilacs down by 1/3. I had beautiful new growth in the spring, many runners. At this time all of the new growth has died and other branches are also looking sketchy. Any ideas?

Hello Lynnette
You can compare what signs you see with the list of “pests and problems” of lilac here-
https://web.extension.illinois.edu/hortanswers/plantdetail.cfm?PlantID=456&PlantTypeID=8
Lilac is also susceptible to verticillium wilt- https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/verticillium-wilt-of-trees-and-shrubs/
A picture of the whole shrub and a close up picture of the wilted part can be emailed to <personal data hidden> for more ideas. This is the MSU Plant and Pest Diagnostic lab. They may ask for a sample branch- and instructions, fee schedule, etc for submitting samples are here
