I live near Jackson (5 miles east) On Saturday I found several gypsy moth caterpillars under one of my maple trees and one on a nearby shrub. I hear that there is a serious infestation near Rose City. Is this something that I should try to stop early? If so what do you recommend?

Hello Ken,
It sounds like you might be seeing dead caterpillars? If they are dead, that is good, biological controls may be at work.
