black lace elderberry #757388

Asked June 21, 2021, 9:18 AM EDT

Hi, we have a new (perhaps 6 weeks old) black lace elderberry bush that is growing, was doing quite well, until I noticed that some bottom leaves were being eaten. There are no visible bugs on the bush, even though I read that aphids can be a problem. I could spray for them, but how do I fight an invisible enemy? Any other ideas? Thanks!

Expert Response

Hi and thanks for your question about your black lace elderberry. You don't have a picture, but you are right, the plant is susceptible to aphids and spider mites which might make the leaves appear "eaten". It has mild toxicity, so mammals are unlikely.

Most of the research seems to say prune off and dispose of the affected parts and keep checking for insects or new damage. You can spray with a stream of water in case you missed some insects, but until you can find them for identification I would not suggest spraying anything but water.

If the problem continues or worsens, send in some pictures and we'll try again.

Good luck!
