Black streaks and deformed flowers #757378

Asked June 21, 2021, 8:04 AM EDT

Good morning!  Could you please help me determine what's going on with these rose shrubs?  The buds are deformed.  When allowed to bloom they are brown and mushy.  I see some black streaks on the leaves, but not a lot.  Overall, the leaves look pretty good.  I've sprayed with Thiomyl for botrytis.  On June 4th I sprayed for Thrips with Conserve.  ( had seen thrips).  I've also sprayed everything with Orthene, but I forget the date.  I don't want to poison them.  Could you help me figure out what is going on?  Thanks so much.  Laura

Expert Response

Thrips could be the source of your problems.  Their feeding can cause the deformities.  You will need to be vigilent.  Depending on surrounding plants, thrips could return.  They could also cary viruses which could cause problems.  Without a closer look at the plants, I can not say much more.

You can try removing the damaged leaves.  If the spots continue, you might have a fungal infection reinfecting from the ground or other plants.

Ugh!  I hate thrips.

I will spray again.

Thank you for a detailed response.

Laura

Good morning,

Leaf hoppers on roses!  I can see them.

I used Botanigard 2 days ago, but am still seeing them.  Any recommendations?

Thank you so much.  It’s so nice to be able to ask an expert!

Best,

Laura

leafhoppers are not a soft bodied insect so the material you are using most likely will not affect them.

Also, biologics usually take some time to show effects since it usually involves another organism which must attack or infect the pest.  This takes time to show control.

As for suggestions on what to use, you will need to do some research on your own.  We can not reccommend any particular pesticide.  You can request labels from manufacturers so you can decide before you buy so you will know what the material will control and not control.  Most will control insects on the label if you follow the instructions.
