honey locust diseased? #757344

Asked June 20, 2021, 7:20 PM EDT

I noticed that our honey locust had a lot of granular particles on the ground this year and there are bugs and curling leaves this year as well. I consulted a tree company but wanted to reach out for some information prior to having them come out. My neighbor had an infestation last year with his locust was wondering if maybe we have the same. The tree has always had beautiful leaves and is looking very bare this year. Thanks! lois

Thank you for your question.

The granular substance you describe is probably honeydew, a sugary liquid secreted by aphids and some other bugs. It will attract ants and other insects. Usually this is a temporary problem but with big infestations it can be a nuisance.

There are several insects that can cause problems for honey locust trees. Here is a Fact Sheet specifically about these insects:

Additionally, look for aphids on the leaves and twigs. Aphids also secrete honeydew. They can cause curling of the leaves as well. Here is a Fact Sheet on aphids:

I hope you will find this information helpful.
