Sasanqua camellia and cottony scale #757322

Asked June 20, 2021, 4:56 PM EDT

I’ve been dealing with cottony scale ( and the resultant black sooty mold) for two years now on my hedge (7 plants) of sasanqua camellias. Things I’ve tried are dawn dish soap in water for the s.m. The plants are now dropping yellowed leaves so I’m ready to get serious. What can I spray them with now (a summer oil or seven?) to kill the scale and should I spray with a horticultural spray in the fall to kill any eggs? Thanks Cathy Forsythe

The link below provides information on Cottony Camellia Scale:

Products which are registered for control of scale on landscape plants are many and their active ingredients include:

acetamiprid, azadirachtin (organic), carbaryl, clothianidin, dinotefuran, fenvalerate, fluvalinate, horticultural oils (organic), imidacloprid, insecticidal soap (organic), malathion, pyrethrins (organic), pyrethroids and spinosad (organic) . Sprays are better used in late spring /early summer to control the "crawlers", which are the young, mobile life stage of the scale. Feel free to write with questions.
