dying branches on many of my young trees #757084

Asked June 18, 2021, 3:50 PM EDT

Trees that I planted two- and three years ago have branches that have apparently died. All the leaves on those branches have turned brown and shriveled. This has happened to Cleveland Pear trees, two oak trees, and appears to be beginning on a young maple tree. Beyond that, it is happening to some of my bushes, e.g. a red-twig dogwood. One of the Cleveland Pear trees that has been in the ground maybe four years and has done very well, has grown tall (maybe a bit over 12 feet) looks like it is dying! The top tip is completely brown and shriveled. It also appears to be seriously damaging my two birch trees. one of What's wrong? What can I do?

Expert Response

Douglas you have given us a very difficult problem to solve and one, I believe, where you need someone on-site who can ask questions and observe the signs and symptoms of the damage to your trees.

With that thought in mind, here are a couple options for you to consider:

(1) You can contact your county OSU Extension office and ask if they could come out and help you with your problem. Here is their contact information: 580 Calumet Lane
Dayton, Ohio 45417 PH:<personal data hidden>. Now that they are back in the office full time, they are probably backlogged so please be patient if you choose this option.

(2) Your second choice is to check the internet for an ISA Certified Arborist and ask them to come out and do an on-site analysis of your problem. The ISA Certified arborist is specifically trained to analyze the type of problem you are experiencing and provide you with treatment options.

Just from what you have told me and the pictures you sent and due to the extent of the problem and the large number of possible causes, you definitely have an issue that needs on-site analysis. Your problem definitely needs some on-site detective work.

Thank you for your question and I hope everything works out OK for your trees and shrubs.
