Dog wood problem #756481

Asked June 15, 2021, 9:21 PM EDT

A local nursery tells me my 20 year old dogwood tree has a virus and that there is not a cure, I need to take it down. How can I confirm this? If the tree has a virus is there a cure? What do I need to do before planting another tree? Thank you Chuck

Expert Response

Our PNW Disease Management Handbook does not list any virus diseases that have been confirmed on dogwood in Oregon. So I'm not sure what that might be. There are a number of fungal pathogens that do affect Dogwood, however. Is it possible to share some photos of the tree and the affected leaves or other parts?

The tree did not bloom this year, I figured it was damaged in the ice storm in Feburary, now the leaves are small and or deformed. I've attached some pictures, if you need more pics or a sample of the tree let me know. I really don't want to loose this tree if it can be saved. I'm spraying it with a systemic fungicide today, hopefully that will help.

Thank you in advance for your help.
Chuck

Was any herbicide used on the lawn this spring?
