Loblolly Pine in Northwest Austin #756320
Asked June 15, 2021, 10:58 AM EDT
I have a very large pine in my yard. The needles have all turned brown and have been falling for the last couple of months. The trunk seems intact without loosing bark or developing holes. The limbs are still generally turned upwards but I can't find green areas on them. I am concerned that the tree is dying. Should I continue to wait or go ahead and give up on the tree and have it removed. A picture of the tree is attached.

Hi Ann:
Thanks for your question. So sorry to see the current state of your impressively large Loblolly pine. It's been a very challenging year for so many trees of all kinds.
The extension service put out an article back in March in the wake of the big freeze, and it mentions pines, giving some hope for them as a group: http://counties.agrilife.org/smith/files/2021/03/Freeze-Damage-2021.pdf
But it's hard to know the specific health and future of your tree, of course.
I suggest that you engage with a certified arborist who can give you sound, specific, consulting about your tree. We can't make recommendations about particular arborists, but you can find one here: https://www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist
Best wishes for its regaining health.
Kind Regards,
Gregory
