Hello,
That is a black vine weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)
The black vine weevil is an occasional invader of Michigan homes. This weevil is also an important pest of several ornamental plants including yew, rhododendron, azalea and juniper. Most of the damage is caused by the larvae feeding on the roots. Adults feed on foliage and leave half-moon shaped notches along the edges. These weevils cannot fly and must enter the dwelling by crawling or by being carried in with plant material. The best long-term control strategy is to prevent the entry of this insect by caulking and sealing cracks around windows, doors, vents and possible points of entry. A vacuum cleaner is the best method of controlling black vine weevil indoors.
This insect can be discouraged from entering homes by spraying a persistent insecticide such as permethrin (sold under a variety of brand names, or bifenthrin (sold as Ortho Home Defense Max or Ortho Bug-B-Gon) around the outside of the home.
Be sure to read and follow all instructions and safety precautions found on the label before using any pesticide.
Best regards,
Howard
