So much plant damage this year (2021) #755687

Asked June 12, 2021, 8:30 AM EDT

Plants in my garden are growing well, but I have seen much leaf damage on them, particularly on the ones in semi-shade. Wondering if there is something I can do without killing pollinators. Thanks. Maureen

Expert Response

For the most part (photos 1 and 2) this looks like feeding damage from four-lined plant bug nymphs, and some minor chewing damage (possibly from beetles, caterpillars, or slugs) in photo 3. Fortunately, four-lined plant bugs have just one generation per year and the damage they do is primarily cosmetic. You can trim out the damaged leaves and new growth will fill in as the season goes on. No insecticide is recommended for these.

Similarly, for the chewing damage in the third photo - trim out the damaged leaves if you want, and monitor your plants regularly. Very often the insect that has caused feeding damage will already be gone from the scene by the time you notice it (and some feed at night). We would not recommend an insecticide without a firm identification of the insect -- and this damage is relatively minor.

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated. Everybody has to feed on something, I guess. Maureen
