two trees in our yard with problems - looking for diagnosis & abatement solution #755394

Asked June 10, 2021, 5:21 PM EDT

hello, moved into this house almost one year ago & am seeing these blights on our crabapple (?) tree. attached is a pic (4628) showing the weird maroon and tan-colored spots all over it. also attached are 2 shots (4633/37) of our grand maple tree out front. this "affliction" is all over the one maple tree and i fear may be in the process of “jumping” over to the other adjacent maple. i don’t recall having seen either of these problems on the trees from late june of last year (when we arrived) until now so am guessing it’s something new? in any event, i’d love to help them return to their healthy virgorous state and look forward to your diagnosis and suggestions. thanks much - and GO GOPHERS!! lisa ramezzano (UM-Mpls class of 1981)

The crabapple appears to have rust.  There are several causative rust organisms but all have cedars nearby. See the website for additional information:

The maple appears to have one of several leaf spot diseases.   If the curling at the end of the branches is seen over the entire tree, it is likely anthracnose.  Tar spot is another possibility that usually starts later in the summer, but given our recent weather, it could be that. Compare what you are seeing with the following website:
