What to do about moles in my lawn? #755376

Asked June 10, 2021, 3:52 PM EDT

I have started seeing mole hills on my lawn. I'm not sure how to best deal with the moles and repair my lawn. Any advice you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

Andrew,

When it comes to lawn and garden damage, it's important to differentiate between mole and gophers. Moles create "volcano" shaped mounds whereas gopher mounds are horseshoe shaped.

Then, too, moles burrow at a more shallow dept than do gophers. Such activity results in a slightly raised ridge visible on the soil surface and connecting one mound to the next.

For both animals, the answer is trapping. See Meadow Voles and Pocket Gophers also Controlling Moles. For the latter, notice the "Note" which directs one to download the document from the OSU Scholars Archive.
