Is it too late to plant Dahlia Tubers in Northeast Ohio #755353

Asked June 10, 2021, 2:57 PM EDT

I have dahlia tubers (cafe au lait, and other dinner plate varieties) and just planted them today (6/10). Typically I start my tubers indoors in pots in April and they bloom in late august. Am I too late planting them directly into the ground? I live in Amherst, Ohio 44001. Thank you!

Expert Response

Thank you for your question!
I just planted a dahlia tuber yesterday! Somehow it got separated from the others, and I just found it.  So you are not alone!

I do not think we are too late.  They may not bloom until the beginning of September, but at least they will not have been wasted.

I know some vegetables actually catch up in size to earlier planted vegetables because of the heat.  I am not sure about dahlias catching up, but I'm sure they'll bloom!

Best regards!
