What are best low maintenance plants to withstand high temps, sandy soil, deer in Northern MI? #754746

Asked June 08, 2021, 10:21 AM EDT

Hello, I am hoping you have some resources to share about the best plants and shrubs to grow around our summer place off Crystal Drive in the Crystal Highlands. Although I'm a Master Gardener down state, I'm having trouble finding low maintenance plants that like the sandy soil and climate in this area. Compounding the sand problem is the hot sun, the deer, and the lack of attention since we are not around enough to ensure adequate watering. The poor babies are pretty much on their own although we do screen shrubs from the deer. I'm hoping you have a suggested plant list, some suggested natives, or some other ideas for improving things. Thanks for your attention,

Benzie County Michigan

Hello.  This is the best list I could find.  It may be best to look at a variety of ornamental grasses for your area.  I hope this helps!

Thank you for your reply.  Very helpful.  I haven't looked carefully at the plant lists included, but many appear to be natives or at least not stocked at local nurseries.  Can you suggest a source in the Beulah/Frankfort area or beyond.

Try googling ‘native plant nurseries in MI’ and also check with your county conservation district since they often have spring and fall sales.
