Hedges to facilitate privacy #754615

Asked June 07, 2021, 5:46 PM EDT

For the past 20 years we have resided in Bay Colony, which is in Dagsboro, we had undeveloped woods, wildlife and many birds behind our home. Within the past few days, the lots behind our home have been COMPLETELY cleared.to prepare for 2 homes. It is only 12 feet to the property line of one of the lots; although Green Giant Ab. had been suggested , they will probably grow to be too big and encroach on other property. We are at a loss as to what to plant to provide privacy and to BRING back the birds. Any assistance is greatly appreciated as would a visit from Master Gardeners as is available in New Castle County. I couldn't find the consultation for Sussex County on your website. I look forward to hearing from you at your earlies convenience

Expert Response

Sussex County Master Gardeners do not do homeowner site visits.  I have sent you an email via our helpline, discussing alternatives to Giant Emerald Arborvitae including Emerald Green Arborvitae and Spartan Juniper.  chatham.ces.ncsu.edu/2016/10/what-is-the-best-evergreen-for-screening/

100' is a very long monoculture and not very aesthetically pleasing.  Losing any one of these trees to pest or disease in the future will leave a gap in your privacy screen. I also sent you the Missouri Botanical suggestions for a narrow, mixed border screen consisting of evergreen & deciduous trees, shrubs and vines.  https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/your-garden/help-for-the-home-gardener/advice-tips-resources/visual-guides/privacy-screens-for-narrow-spaces.aspx
