Bromus tectorum seed viability #754434

Asked June 07, 2021, 9:39 AM EDT

We have cheat grass with seed heads. Are seed heads viable (capable of germination) at any stage (even when "young and green"), or do they only become viable after drying out? Is there a way to tell by looking at the plant? We want to time our mowing but don't want to scatter seed and make things worse.

Hello,

Cheat grass can be viable as soon as you see the seeds. I have seen a pulled cheat grass plant (without seeds) continue growing after being pulled and go to seed in a trash can. Unless it is very early in the year, if you choose to mow, it is best to mow cheat grass with a mower that has a collection bag.

Thank you.  I was afraid of that.  Truth hurts.  :-)
