Strawberry underdevelopment #754408

Asked June 07, 2021, 7:19 AM EDT

Some of my strawberry fruits have a green tip that does not fully develop. I suspect a nutrient deficiency because of some interveinal yellowish coloring. I need to have the soil tested, but last time it was tested several years back the pH was high such as a 7. I wondered if you could tell by the photo what type situation I might have.

We do not think this is nutritional. Our guesses would be incomplete pollination/fertilization of ovules, environmental stress (excessive hot or cold temps before or during flowering and fruit set. https://extension.umd.edu/resource/growing-selecting-planting-and-training-strawberries

OK, then how do you explain the leaf coloration?

Hi- there is a subtle lack of color uniformity that does not suggest a virus or significant nutrient deficiency or toxicity issue. More dramatic and widespread inter-veinal chlorosis could point to an iron or managanese deficiency. You could rule out nutrient and pH issues by having the soil tested (if this hasn't been done in the past three years).

We don't think that a nutritional disorder produced the fruit symptom in the photo.

Please send additional photos if symptoms change or worsen.

Thanks Jon, I agree with you and doubt it is a virus or significant nutrient deficiency or toxicity issue. It has been about three years so I will get a soil sample off.
