Expert Response

Was it found inside or outside?
It's hard to tell from the pictures what it could be.I would take a sample in to your local county extension office.

It was found inside.   My mother is ill with metastatic breast cancer, and she does not do the typical housecleaning she has done her entire life. I was wondering if this might be something that came in through an open window, or if it was some thing I should be concerned about and follow up on with some type of spray. There were several of them, and they seem to confined to one or two rooms. But I think at one time I killed as many as 6 in a 30 minute span of time.

Hello,

From what I can see here, this is a ground beetle. They are accidental home invaders. They can come in through windows or door and do sometime orient towards lights. They can't survive inside though, so no worries about an "infestation" here. Outside they eat other small insects or seeds and are sometimes considered beneficial.
