Unknown flower #754325

Asked June 06, 2021, 2:47 PM EDT

I am looking for an ID on this pretty little flower. Also, I have e Dallas that are wasting away. The leaves and stems wilt on the outside edges leaving the center green and healthy looking. Any ideas? This is such a wonderful service. Thank you, Penny Stewart

Expert Response

Hi, Penny,

Your purple flower appears to be some variety of Campanula glomerata, or Clustered Bellflower.

I think perhaps your auto-correct changed the wording of your question, but I'm going to assume 'e Dallas' was supposed to be 'some dahlias'.  (If that's not correct, please let me know!)  I don't see any signs of insect damage or spots on the leaves, it just looks like they wilted.  It's possible the heat and lack of rain is stressing them.  If they perk back up with water and this cooler weather you can just make sure the soil is moist (though not consistently soggy) and perhaps give them a little shade if it gets really hot again.  If they stayed like that, they may have Dahlia-Wilt, which is a fungal problem.  If that's the problem, you'll need to remove the plant and dispose of it and then you can plant something else that has resistance to Wilt.  Here's a resource that lists both plants that are susceptible (near the top) and plants that have resistance (near the bottom).  And another resource with more plant lists.  Make sure to disinfect your tools after working with infected plants so you don't spread the problem to other plants in your garden.

Thank you!
