We have noticed very lush growth for trees, flowering bushes/trees, roses, etc. what is the reason for this this year?

Hi Catherine. Thanks for reaching out to us.

There isn't really a single, simple answer to your question. Plant growth is dependent upon a wide range of factors, both natural and human-influenced. To narrow it down, I'm going to make two assumptions.

1. Because your question suggests that this is a general pattern in your area, we can probably ignore possible human inputs, such as soil amendment, fertilizer, pesticides, etc.

2. Your question also indicates that this growth pattern is noticeably different from prior years involving the same trees/shrubs. Therefore, I think we can also ignore long-term environmental factors such as soil type, plant hardiness, geographic location.

I believe the answer to your question can be found in the more variable environmental factors that typically influence growth - light, temperature, moisture. The timing of this year's series of warm and cool temperatures, rainfall amounts, and cloudy vs sunny days created an environment that was particularly favorable for the trees and shrubs that you noticed. That same combination may have been less favorable to some of the plants in your area as well. Here's a link to a good explanation of how these factors influence plant growth and health.
