Sullivant's milkweed with black dots and... #754230

Asked June 05, 2021, 9:10 PM EDT

Hi! My Sullivant's milkweed has black dots and something is going on with the leaves. Any advice on how to save them would be appreciated. Thank you! P.s. Please let me know if additional photos would be helpful.

Hi Valerie,

Without any pics I'm unsure of what you are showing me.  Could you please send pics?

Thanks,

Diana

I apologize! As soon as I selected "submit" I'd realized I'd forgotten to add photos.

Hi Valerie,   It is difficult to see the black on the leaves.  Are you sure these are not eggs of some sort?  Can you tell?  If, by looking closely, you can tell me these are not eggs then it is probably a fungus and I can pursue some research for you in that area.  Can you confirm it is not an insect egg?  This means it is has depth to it.  I just can't tell from the pic.  In the meantime I'm going to check with our local Monarch expert and get back to you.

Hi again Valerie,

I did get a chance to speak with Kaye and show her the pics you sent.  She is confident that this is sooty mold.   There is alot of info out there with natural cures.  This link is to a presentation about sooty mold and I thought it might help.
