Hi Tim,

Yes, that is gypsy moth caterpillars. We are experiencing a 20 year population boom here in Michigan; pictures like this can be replicated throughout the northern portion of the state.

It's too late for an aerial application of Btk; it's a bacterial solution that coats the leaves killing the caterpillars that eat the leaves. Btk only kills young caterpillars; the frass and leaf damage in the pictures indicate the caterpillars are older.

I've attached some landowner management strategies that can be employed on the trees surrounding your home; they are not feasible for implementation on the entire 10 acres. At this point, you are the best control. Place the duct tape bands on the most affected trees and kill the caterpillars congregated below the bands by scraping them into a bucket of soapy water. Killing them on the tree can leave an unsightly stain, and will smell overtime. Spray caterpillars on structures with soap and water to kill them. Might want to rinse the house off to avoid staining.

This information comes from direct experience, as my yard looks the same as yours. There may be some hope of a population collapse if we receive a soaking rain or two as it will activate a fungus that kills only gypsy moth caterpillars.

I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me directly if you have more specific questions I didn't address.

Thank you,
