how would bears react to moose repellant plant spray. #754085

Asked June 04, 2021, 10:32 PM EDT

There are sprays to discourage moose from chowing down on your foliage- in my case two new pear trees. I was looking at Plantskydd which is supposed to deter moose and deer and things by being made of porcine and bovine blood mixed with vegetable oil and suchlike. We did get a bear in our neighborhood last year for the first time ever. Is it possible that spraying something like this would attract bears? What would I want to keep in mind? Not that I expect any more bears unless we have another pandemic but just in case.

Expert Response

I do not know whether this repellants will attract or deter bears.  I can see reasons for both.  I would lean towards attracting bears.  However, I have never heard of bears going after pears.

Thank you for your reply.  I was thinking of the blood smell, if that would have any nearby bears decide to sniff around in my yard.  Then again we've had one since I moved here in the early '80s.
Thanks again

The blood was what I was thinking.

I might go with something else then.  Just in case.  Thank you again.
