Princeton elm leaf curl and gritty residue #753921

Hi, Our Princeton elm has a fair number of curled knotty leaves which may have insects inside. A gritty, sand like residue is coating a yard table under the tree and elsewhere. Ideas? Thanks.

The knotted leaves are probably aphid domiciles. However, elms are susceptible to other insects that form leaf galls. Compare the affected leaves on your tree to those shown here:

The gritty deposits may be honeydew that has crystalized.
