laying Age of Guinea Fowl #753900

Asked June 04, 2021, 12:04 AM EDT

Hello ! I read your article and it was super informative. I was thinking to keep 500 or 1000 guinea flocks for egg production but i am confused about at which age they start laying eggs.In some articles it is mentioned after 1 year and in some articles it is 20-32 weeks of age. So what is the best answer according to your expereince ? And also at which month of the should i raise them ? So that i may get best production in the season! I live in Pakistan and here Spring starts after 15february and Summer starts immediately means temperature rises very rapidly. In the full summer temperature rises about 46-48 degree Celsius.

Expert Response

Sexual maturity guinea hens appears to occur around 27-28 weeks of age with the onset of egg production, although there are reports of egg production starting as early as 21 weeks of age (Abdul-Rahmana, Jeffcoate, and Obese 2018). Higher oviduct and ovary weights have been reported for guinea hens kept on range versus those on deep litter or in battery cages (Oke et al. 2015). This may be an indication of accelerated rate of reproductive development on range. The hens on free-range also had higher liver weights which corresponded to the follicle recruitment. The liver is the main source of egg proteins and yolk materials.
