Do we have chiggers? #753888

Asked June 03, 2021, 10:34 PM EDT

Hi there - my research is giving me very mixed answers, so I come to you to ask whether we have “chiggers”, or some related biting species, in this area. My children are getting clusters of bites every few days, and we have all but eliminated all the obvious culprits (bed bugs, mosquitos, spiders). But the mystery remains. Lots of the internet says they do not live here, but everything I read about their bite patters matches up. And the source would have to be our yard, given their regularity.

It would be helpful to answer your question if you could send along upclose photos if the bug bites.  Their size and pattern, and location, could provide some clues to identification.  Thanks alot

Hi there,

I let this email lapse for awhile, but the problem continues! My family and I are covered in bites anytime we spend any time outside in our yard, and neighborhood. They are not mosquitoes and we have ruled out all indoor infestations. I have lived in Portland for over ten years, and in this home for 5, and never had this problem before. I can’t help but think this is an impact of climate change, redistributing a species that did not previously live here. Have you received any other such reports or inquiries?

We never see any insects on us, except for one time when I saw a barely visible little mite type creature crawling on me. Not sure if it was the culprit. Our bites are all over and are incredibly persistently itchy. Worse than mosquito bites. The bites are red and raised, similar to mosquito bites, are sometimes in groups of 2-3 in one area. No red ring or obviously present puncture holes. They often itch to the point of breaking the skin or even bruising from all the scratching. It’s quite horrible.

Any insights would be much appreciated.
