Princess Kay Plum tree #753823

Asked June 03, 2021, 4:28 PM EDT

I've had this tree for about 6 years. This spring after the blossoms were done blooming there are strange looking yellow hollow pods on the branches. This is the first year this has happened. They are shaped kinda like small plums but are hollow. I know the tree will not produce plums but why this issue.

Expert Response

Without a picture it is difficult to assess the problem.  It could be either brown rot or plum pockets.  Compare what you are seeing with the pictures at the following website.  If you think it is neither, please send a picture.  See:  http://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/deciduous/prunus/fruitbrown.html

The hollowed leathery fruit is an indication for plum pockets.  The most important step is to remove the affected plums.  A fungicide can be used right after blossom. See the website for more information: https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/plum-pockets
