Tiny black bee with yellow and black stripe leggs #753788

Asked June 03, 2021, 2:45 PM EDT

I noticed this tiny black bee with yellow and black striped legs foraging on my Ceanothus americanus this morning. I've been noticing these tiny bees are in abundance in my garden this year. It moves very fast and doesn't settle long and so it was a challenge to capture the images I did. I hope the images are enough to give a proper identification because I'm a botanical illustrator and would love to include it in my work. Thank you for your time and insight! I live in church hill, in Richmond VA and since it's the city I don't see many bees in abundance like this. I've been steadily striving to add more and more native plants for the bees the past few years but this is the first year I've seen these tiny bees. I've also observed leafcutter bees in my yard, american bumble bees, and mason bees but never teeny tiny bees (other than the sweat bee). It's exciting!

Hi, It appears to be a Mining Bee, family Andrenidae. They can be common this time of year. The are solitary but many may nest in a small are of suitable soil.
