We have several large black locust trees at the side of our yard, and we have suckers growing in many places. When I cut them back they just regrow. Is there anything I can put on the stems after I've cut them back to keep them from re-growing?

Hi,
The black locust tree (robina pseudoacacia) will make you crazy! I have several in the woods behind our house, so I understand your frustration.
I have found the most effective method of dealing with the suckers is to cut them off about 1-2 inches above the ground and then apply some glyphosate to the stalk. Glyphosate is a broad spectrum herbicide found in several commercial weed killers, e.g. Round-Up. Make sure you wear gloves.

I have some Roundup spray, but it's at least five years old. Would it still be good? I quit using it because a family with small kids moved in downstairs.
Check the container for an expiration date, I think it is good for 3-5 years once opened.

Thanks!
