Tree stump #753686

Asked June 03, 2021, 9:08 AM EDT

We had a river birch cut down and the stump is oozing this awful looking slime. Do you know why and what we can do about it?

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

The condition on your stump is called slime flux (wetwood). It is caused by bacteria formations on rotten wood. Removal of the stump will be the best method of taking care of this. Below is link for information on wetwood which is similar.

As long as there is rotting wood and bacterial the slime flux will likely be present.
