Cause of root mounds in the grass #753649
Asked June 02, 2021, 9:54 PM EDT
We have a couple Aspen trees and a cut tree (unknown type) in our side yard. Last year we had 1 root mound but this year there are around 8-9 all around this planter bed. Most are on the Aspen tree side but there is also a large one all the way on the tree stump side. I dug one out, treated the small roots with Sucker Punch and was able to add dirt and grass seed. Can you tell me what is causing these and what can I do to stop them?

Expert Response
Hi Stephanie,
It appears that the root is trying to grow another tree, aspens are notorious for doing this. I wouldn't be too concerned with this, the root tissue actually looks like undifferentiated callus tissue. If you are using sucker punch, it may actually travel through the xylem/phloem tissue and kill the semi-mature aspen trees that are already established, so be cautious using this approach.
