Maple Tree Top Problem: #753616

Asked June 02, 2021, 5:28 PM EDT

i have two young maple trees that were purchased from and planted by a nursery 3 years ago. The riser year they leafed out only on the bottom part similar to the pictures I have included for this year. The second year they leafed out better, but this year they are more like the first year. The trunks are full of suckers (leaves growing right out of the trunk). Last year, after I trimmed off some of the unleaded branches, new branches grew quickly and seemed to flourish. Hence, I was surprised to have the same problem again this year. I have regularly watered the trees according to the directions of the nursery.. My question is, what are the best things to do to not lose the trees altogether. I look forward to your response.

Expert Response

Hi Lawrence,

I must admit, it's fun to see the person behind the question!

Thanks for your question and the photos you've sent. It's hard to exactly determine what might be going on, but it could be linked to a planting issue (perhaps too deep) or a root issue. The suckering that's happening concerns me, since suckering is common, but more prevalent on trees that are stressed.

We do have a Tree Team of Master Gardener volunteers that go out and do home visits. The fee is $25. They are advanced diagnosticians who receive training specific for tree diagnostics. It might be worth the investment to have someone assess the tree in person and give you a better recommendation.

If you're interested in this, would you email me your address and contact information (including your phone number)? If the fee is an issue, we can work something out.

My email is: <personal data hidden>

Thank you!
