Tree identification in Summit County #753589

Asked June 02, 2021, 4:10 PM EDT

We have been snipping the many new saplings which come up each year, but, of course they return unless we resort to herbicide. (We are also contending with buckthorns). We have not cut down the few adults, but want to manage competition with oaks and other natives we're planting. I also have a photo of the bark as well, if needed. Thanks!

Expert Response

My resources and the link below agree that your seedlings look like one of the varieties of ash tree.  These trees are very common, and have always been regarded as good landscape trees.  In recent years, though, they have been at risk for invasion by an insect pest called Emerald Ash Beetle, and planting them is no longer recommended.  If the link helps you make a positive identification, that will be great.

If you need further confirmation, you may learn more by calling or visiting your  county's OSU Extension Service office, at:

Address: 440 Vernon Odom Blvd. City: Akron. State: Ohio. Zipcode: 44307. Phone:<personal data hidden>.

They may have a specialist on staff, or be able to refer you to a licensed arborist who could make a positive identification.

Thank you for your question.  We wish you success.

Thank you! I believe it is white ash.
