How to kill Creeping Charlie but not hostas #753522

Asked June 02, 2021, 1:12 PM EDT

We planted hostas on a hillside adjacent to our home to control erosion. Now Creeping Charlie plants are taking over our hillside and choking out the hostas. Is there a chemical I can apply with a hose to kill Creeping Charlie but not the hostas. Thanks for your recommendations.

Olmsted County Minnesota

Expert Response

No, unfortunately they are both broadleaf plants. I can suggest soaking the ground until it is soggy and then pulling the creeping Charlie. Hosta roots are deeper and should stay in place. Also mulching very heavily will make it easier to pull creeping Charlie. It will take a couple of years because it will have dropped seed as well.

Thank you for your recommendation.

Good luck, it is possible to get rid of it. Paint ting  with a paintbrush roundup on creeping Charlie can be done safely in larger areas.

Thanks for your attempt to help.
