Asked June 02, 2021, 11:07 AM EDT

I've had a north star cherry tree planted in my yard now for a few years now and I have never had it flower. Why is this? I'd really like to have cherries! It looks healthy....

Expert Response

Cherry trees will blossom and fruit when they reach sufficient age. Sour cherry trees, such as ‘North Star’, mature at around three to five years of age, and sweet cherry trees at four to seven years. The overall health of the tree, which is influenced by a variety of factors, is the key to success when growing cherry trees. A late damaging frost can harm flower production, and we did receive a late frost this year after a few weeks of initial warmth which may have tricked the tree into starting buds. Your tree appears to get adequate sun and looks quite healthy otherwise. You might want to wait a year or two to see if you get flowering; if not, take a soil sample and send to the plant disease clinic to see if there are any deficiencies in your soil that might contribute to the lack of flowering.
