Garden Flower or dangerous plant? #753425

Asked June 01, 2021, 10:32 PM EDT

A few days ago I purchased two attractive plants. One is the Montana Blue Centaurs and the other Red Valerian. Looking a t the internet to make sure I had the best soil and watering requirements for these plants, One web site listed the Montana blue as one you should never plant! Also the Valerian spreads in unwanted areas as well. Should I throw these away--take them back? Please give me some insight. Thank you !

Expert Response

Hello,

Remember the sources of where you're pulling this information. While both can have a tendency to be weedy, it really depends on the culture you provide. Colorado is a very dry climate and plants that are deemed weedy in other parts of the United States may not be weedy here (due to moisture).

I have Jupiter's beard (red valerian) in my landscape and it has not become a problem. But my landscape is very dry and it doesn't get any supplemental water.

So it's up to you to decide if this is something you want to plant with the potential to have to pull it or control it, if they get too much moisture.

There are lots of other wonderful perennials to consider, especially those from the Plant Select(R) program: www.plantselect.org

These have been selected and introduced to do well in the semi-arid west.

Dear Alison O'Connor PhD,

Thank You so much for the information.  I really wanted to have these plants as part of our landscape and you put my mind at ease.  I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Sincerely,
