Re: Red Splendor tree pruning #753381

Asked June 01, 2021, 7:21 PM EDT

Last year I pruned back a co-leader on the top. This year I'm unsure what and where to prune. It seems top heavy.

I tried to add a picture but I got a pop up saying it was too large

Hi,

It would be best to wait until late winter to prune your crab. Doing so now will make it more susceptible to pests and diseases. https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/pruning-trees-and-shrubs

Specifically, I'm confused about the bushy leader and if I should prune it, how?

It’s hard to say without looking at the tree. I would prune to a shape that is pleasing to your eye.
