We wanted to check for disease before pulling up and planting something new.

I doubt there is any disease.  To get a better opinion, pull up the dead bush and bring into your extension office.  But what I believe is the problem,  the lilacs were planted too close to the house and didn't get enough water and too much lime from the foundation.  Extend your bed out another 1-2 feet, amend with some compost and plant your shrubs in the middle.  The dead grass looks to dry from being stepped on.  With the bed extended, the walkway will be used rather than the grass.
They’ve been alive and well for 4 years... this just happened over the past year- the grass has dies beside the brick too... just recently- fine for 4 years too...  could it happen that long after being planted?

yes this could be because the bushes grew to the point that they need more water and different years will have different environments.  The grass dying by the bricks,  again may be due to differing rainfall or more foot traffic.  Also, this kind of decline in grass can be due to pet urine.  When soil gets compacted under the grass, the grass can be more susceptible to some fungi (e.g. snow mold).  Call your extension office to see when you can bring in examples to rule out diseases.
