Grass Seed Mix Recommendation #753111

Asked May 31, 2021, 4:53 PM EDT

Can you recommend a grass seed mixture that is low maintenance and shade tolerant? Ideally it would be attractive, able to be walked on a bit (not a heavy traffic area) low water needs once established and maybe grow slowly to a maximum of 12 inches or so. I live in the city of Durham, Oregon. There are several very large fir trees in my backyard where this grass would be planted, but it does get some sun through the day. The area to cover would be approximately 300 square feet. A mix with different types of grass seed and other plants would be ideal, but if a particular type of grass would be better suited to this situation I am fine with that too. The two photos below were taken at 1:30 PM on May 31, 2021. They highlight the area to be planted, between the large fir tree and the raised bed garden and between the rose garden and the paver path. Thanks for your help and let me know if further information would be helpful. (Sorry if this is a duplicate message, but I did not receive any feedback notifying me my question was successfully submitted from my earlier submission.) William:

If you are not watering I would use tall fescue, or tall fescue and clover.  You could also mix these two as well.  Seeding the tall fescue first and inter-seeding or over-seeding with the clover after the fescue has germinated.

If you are going to irrigate regularly a mixture of perennial ryegrass and fine fescue, or perennial ryegrass, fine fescue and clover, could be used.

There are several eco-lawn mixtures with other plants like yarrow, English daisy, etc. However, grass and clover has a tendency to dominate these plants, so they likely will not establish.
