What's eating my Ivory Halo Dogwood shrubs? #753086

Asked May 31, 2021, 2:31 PM EDT

3-4 year old plants. Cut back in spring to promote growth. Have just begun to leaf out and now leaves are full of holes. No sign of larvae, etc

Thank you for writing.  There are several possibilities from not too bad to terrible. https://extension.psu.edu/dogwood-diseases

I need a close up picture of a small branch going to diseased leaves.

Also, how do you water your plants?

I have inground irrigation and the sprayer head run along the base of the five bushes.  Although I haven't used it much so far this year.  Maybe 4 times.imageimage

Thank you for writing back.

Boxwoods are susceptible to edema from too much water. https://web.extension.illinois.edu/shrubselector/detail_problem.cfm?PathogenID=215

This damage looks typical for that.

Prune out affected branches using a pruner that is sterilized in bleach, lysol, or alcohol. Cut back to live wood.  Make the cuts diagonally above the leaf node.  Carefully remove all clippings from the area.

Thank you for your new pictures. I believe that I see tiny aphids on the stems and leaves especially on image 0810.

The plant should recover.  You can use bonide, ladybugs (available in bulk at garden stores), insecticidal soap.
