Hydrangea leaves #752903

Asked May 29, 2021, 10:10 PM EDT

My tiny tuff stuff hydrangea leaves get crumbly and discolored. This is the third year I’ve had them and I’ve even tried moving them. Leaves start out healthy and then start to tinge toward purple before crinkling up and disintegrating.

Expert Response

Your hydrangea sounds and looks stressed.  They prefer semi-shade. It should be receiving 1" of water a week, so supplement rainfall if necessary from spring through  fall for 2 years.

Otherwise, be sure it is not planted too deeply  or too high.  Don't pile mulch on stems. Keep it about 2-3" away. And no more than 2-3" deep.

A liquid fertilizer at time of planting can be helpful in making the adjustment from transplanting. Do not over-fertilize.
