Pruning roses #752896
Asked May 29, 2021, 8:29 PM EDT
Is okay to prune roses right now? If so does it matter which type of rose bush? I believe these are carpet roses? They are getting out of control and starting to grow together. Can I prune back now or will they not bloom or should I wait for the fall?

Hello,
Yes, you can prune now, but you may want to wait until this first flush of blossoms opens, then you can prune off the blooming branch when the roses are spent. Keep in mind that it is best not to prune roses after late August in the Mid-west. Pruning stimulates growth, and later in the growing season this tender new growth tends to be more vulnerable to winter cold. The best time to prune these roses is in spring when the forsythia blooms. You can prune this type of rose pretty aggressively at that time as they are vigorous growers. Attached is a good resource for growing roses. (Note: it mentions a light fall pruning- this I would take to mean as removing spent flower stalks, but not removal of branches at that time of year)
