Organic Detroit Dark Beet #752756

Asked May 28, 2021, 4:10 PM EDT

I planted the organic variety of Detriot Dark beet seed in the soil on April 11, 2021. The germination time is not given on the seed packet, however, I am only seeing just a few sprouts pop out of the ground, not even 2" tall. Should I re-seed them? If so, should I soak the seeds first or doesn't that really make any difference.

Expert Response

Sources I could find indicated that germination time for beet seeds can range from 8 to 21 days. Soil temperature is the major determining factor, so it may be that your soil temps are just getting warm enough to sprout those seeds.  Another factor may be the age of the seeds, although  those sources also said they should be viable for four or five years.  I would recommend giving them a little more time before giving up.
