Expert Response

Dear Linda,

After the hot, dry weather we have been having, it is possible that you have some daylily leaf scorch, which is not a disease but rather the plant's reaction to the weather. Here are descriptions of some common problems for daylilies, including leaf scorch: http://hyg.ipm.illinois.edu/pastpest/200711c.html.

As you can see from the link above, there are other things that commonly affect daylily leaves, and testing for them involves actually handling the leaves, so I am including some links below so that you can look for telltale signs. The good news is that most of these things are not fatal to your plants, so I hope that you find your daylilies' problem is mild and can be addressed by selectively removing affected leaves.

If, however, you find pustules on the underside of the leaves and get orange streaks on your hand if you run your hand along the leaves, then you have to be concerned that it is daylily rust, and you might want to treat for that.

I hope some cooler, wetter weather this weekend will help all of our plants perk up!

Best,

WOW!!!  Jennifer, thanks for taking the time to reply & share helpful information.
