"could the oat straw be contaminated with herbicide and or pesticides?". #752444

Asked May 27, 2021, 12:18 AM EDT

After I had 20 bales of oat straw delivered to my home organic food garden, I realized, "could the oat straw be contaminated with herbicide and or pesticides?". Bummer. I even dug down in my rows before setting the straw bales on top to create an organic hugelkultur to retain water, nutrients and create a backyard Oasis. I called Wilco and they have no information concerning what was sprayed on the oat straw. I have been doing some research and testing with planting peas, beans, carrots, and tomato seeds. Some of my plants just isn't flourishing like they should and some are just stunted. So I am growing a buckwheat and fava bean cover crop on the straw/soil and also using an organic fish, kelp, algae organic fertilizer with lots micro organicism fungi mixture hoping to dissipate any contaminates. I will then dispose all of my cover crops, but before I do that I want to have the straw and my soil tested. Can you help me please. I live in Oakridge Oregon Lane County and would like to have any information I need to accomplish the testing. Thank you Gail Grill <personal data hidden>

Expert Response

There is a possibility that the straw could be contaminated. Are you growing directly into the straw (straw bale gardening)? I hope this website helps you decide. Not all herbicides are as long-term in residual actions.
