Growing Hosta plants #752182

Asked May 26, 2021, 12:05 AM EDT

Can you give me some tips for planting Hostas? I have 5 established plants that do well as long as I keep the slugs under control, but now I want to finish out a row of them and wonder if you have advice about soil, ect. I live in Portland - back yard full of morning sun and some afternoon sun. Thanks!

Hostas definitely like slightly acidic (pH 6-6.5) soil that has a lot of humus and regular moisture.  When planting, make sure the hole is big enough so the roots can be spread out.   Also place some organic matter in the hole before filling in around the hosta.   Plant the hosta so the crown is at the soil surface or slightly below.   Then you can put a little slow release fertilizer around the plant.  Place mulch around the plant.

Most hostas do best in the garden when direct sunlight is limited or filtered during the day.  Lighter color  hostas can usually tolerate more sun if they get enough water.    Blue hostas usually tolerate less sun than other color hostas.
