Any Advice on Using Dawn Soap to...... #752174

Asked May 25, 2021, 10:53 PM EDT

I've written before about bagworms on my 200 arborvitae trees. I am spraying with Captain Jack's DBB. However, (a) the spray dries clean. Soon, I cannot tell where I have already sprayed. Also, (b) the spray is pricey, but I like that it an approved organic. So, I was wondering if I could add a few drops of Dawn to the solution to tell how well I am coating the leaves. And, ideally, can a Dawn solution discourage the bagworms from eating the leaves? Has any testing been done in either or both of these areas? In the least, is it safe for the trees, if only as a marker so I knw where/how thoroughly I sprayed ? Thanks, Jon Goldberg

Expert Response

Hello Jon,

We do not recommend adding anything to the spray that the label does not specifically allow. You may end up altering the formulation's effectiveness and the soap (detergent) itself may cause irreversible foliage damage on the arborvitae. All we can suggest is that you spray one arborvitae at a time so it's less likely the spray will dry before you move on to the next. Given your quantity of plants to treat, for the future, hiring a professional pesticide applicator may be more cost-effective and less labor-intensive. They can still use organic pesticides if you wish, or they could use a root-applied systemic instead, and since arborvitae are not flowering plants, that should have little to no impact on pollinators or beneficial insects.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, no local  professional would deal with me in a professional manner, as to be expected in Cecil Co.

Thanks,
Jon G.
