If you have Microsoft excel, I have found it makes a good garden planner, although it does take some time to create the template. Google sheets is free and almost as good. There are lots of planner apps and the only free one I have played with is Gardeners supply. In looking for recommendations I found a couple in the lists below I am going to checkout.

I make blocks of cells that correspond to the number of sq.ft. Label by variety and color code them. I hadn’t thought of using paint with it, I’ll check it out.
