root hairs on seed potato sprouts? #751811

Asked May 24, 2021, 1:57 PM EDT

I've noticed "hairy" white growths on some of my seed potato sprouts. Of the 4 different potato varieties, the white hairs are only on the "Adirondack Blue" . The attached photos are different magnifications of the same sprout. Are these root hairs, or some sort of fungus?

Hi Richard,

Thanks for reaching out to Clear Creek County Extension. I do not have potato expertise, so recommend you contact the CSU Extension/Jefferson County Plant Diagnostic Clinic. I have also attached links to a few Extension factsheets that may be helpful. The Jeffco Plant Diagnostic Clinic at:

https://jeffco.extension.colostate.edu/horticulture/clinic/

has staff and volunteers with specialized training in plant problem diagnosis. The facility is equipped with microscopes and other diagnostic tools for fungal and bacterial culture; some virus testing and pine wilt nematode detection.
